young tortoises hatched at Auckland Zoo in 2008. There are eight on display at Willowbank. The story of the Auckland Zoo tortoises is an interesting one. The two females were confiscated at Wellington Airport in 1996 and given to Auckland Zoo. The male was donated in 2002 by a lady from Dunedin who had been keeping him as a pet since being given to her in northern Rhodesia in 1958. There is a 2005 article here on them:
