Various Pictures of Aquarium

Have you ever gone out to the Channel Islands in the summer to see the congregations of blue and humpback whales? Because of the upwelling currents there is apparently a great amount of plankton there, making it an important whale foraging zone. I was once out there and we were literally surrounded by several blue whales and perhaps a dozen humpbacks. It was a peak experience. It is fairly easily accesible for anyone who wants to visit it. The blues are usually around in July-August. The humpbacks tend to show up Aprilish and stay through end of August. Most of this area is within the Channel Islands National Park.

I'm glad that this exhibit exists to give people a sense of what these animals really look like. The California Academy of Sciences has a real skeleton of a blue whale on display. It is impressive, but does not convey the full scale of the animals like this does.
