@DavidBrown I saw my first wild one in Palau back in the 90's.
In Niue I was able to find a few smaller ones like this one, but saw larger ones that had been caught by the locals (using coconuts as bait).
But Christmas Island (the one in the Indian Ocean) has the largest and densest population in the world because the locals don't eat the crabs. I saw literally hundreds in the time I was there.
