Since the Asian elephant 1930's-era barn (a product of the Works Progress Administration) is being retrofitted to hold Sumatran Orangutans in the Asian Domain section of the zoo, what will become of the exhibit in this photo? Does anyone know?
The last time that I talked to Audubon keepers (about 3 months ago) I was told that they aren't sure what will happen. One possibility is to have 2 separate orang exhibits since the current male and female don't get along. Another possibility is display more gorillas in the old exhibit.
The zoo's website and Facebook pages are surprisingly quiet about the new orangutan plans and no concept art has been released. Hopefully, I'll be able to visit in a couple of weeks and try to find out what's going on.
