Thanks for posting photos of this exhibit, as many of us have been waiting a full year to see images of Trails of Africa. Is it true that the zoo is geared to hold only 4 bull elephants? Is there any hotwire on the trees in the background or are all of them out of reach of the elephants due to hidden moats? My first impression is that this elephant exhibit is far superior to anything found in California and many other states, as there are very few notable visual obstructions and in that regard it is similar to what is found in the 3 truly great elephant habitats (in America) in North Carolina, Nashville and Dallas.
There is a lot of hotwire protecting areas of this exhibit! If you look in the background of the image I'm attaching you should be able to see some of the hotwire protecting the trees.

While we have to agree that there is a fair amount of hot wire throughout the exhibit the elephants still have a lot of space as well as a huge sand mound, mud hole and two pools. We were told by a keeper that of the 4 acres of exhibit the elephants probably have access to somewhere between 2.5-3 acres to utilize.
Those trees were there before the new exhibit. These precautions are, I believe, intended to protect the trees while allowing elephants to wander among them and enjoy the shade.
