Primate Building - Sumatran Orangutan Exhibit

August 7th, 2010.
Keeping orangutans in an all-indoor exhibit is pure craziness, but immersing them in some kind of bizarre, Lewis Caroll-type forest with concrete trees and cement floors is just plain mean. This god-awful enclosure is begging to be jackhammered into oblivion and redesigned for a more appropriate species.

They reproduced in it.

Captive animals will often reproduce in far worse conditions, and especially in the case of apes the quality of the exhibit in many cases has very little to do with the amount of progeny produced. Birmingham is up against stiff competition with Toronto, Brookfield, Fort Wayne, etc, for America's worst orangutan exhibit.

Cleveland does not belong in conversations of horrible Orangatan exhibits.Ok its all indoors and we are not crazy about that. However it is big and has adequate climbing opportunities as well as provides plenty of natural light. We visit these apes 1-2 times a week and can assure all of you that they are one of the most active groups of Orangs around. The photo just posted by evilkittie shows about 30% of the exhibit.Pittsburgh,Fort Wayne,Brookfield and Birmingham are terrible Cleveland is not.
