I'm not sure if it is open-topped or not, but it is surely the best snow leopard exhibit in North America. I love the use of harp wire for close-up viewing.
I remember that there are actually 3 snow leopard exhibits, with one quite small, one average in size and the one (this photo) very impressive. The females and cubs can be separated into the smaller enclosure, and I believe that most of the viewing is harp wire although I do seem to remember that there is also a glass section as well. ZooChat member Reduakari would be the man to ask for the exact details of the 3 habitats.
I have heard this zoo has 12 snow leopards however not all are on exhibit on the same day. I would love to see this Snow Leopard exhibit in person as I am a huge Snow Leopard fan and have yet to see them in an innovative exhibit like this one. Anyways Scott, do you think it could be considered for a top 25 exhibit list?
@BlackRhino: no, I do not think that Himalayan Highlands would be in my top 25 exhibit list, as it is only 1 acre and there are so many other great North American zoo exhibits to compare it to. Don't get me wrong as I think that it has the best snow leopard habitats on the continent (and perhaps second to Zurich Zoo worldwide) but North America simply has a terrific number of high quality zoo exhibits.
