The pool is large but the exhibit is merely average. As you probably already know, the Bronx Zoo is phasing out elephants and supposedly won't be replacing the current ones that they have once they die.
The elephants here are only in their late 30's. Even though they are phasing the exhibit out, they will still have elephants for probably 20 maybe 30 years depending on whether elephant care becomes more advanced. Either way at least 20 more years. Does not look like the elephants are going anywhere soon
This exhibit looks above average to me. Lots of green bushes for browsing. The trees for shade. Large tree truck for scratching. Its very nice for two middle-aged female elephants. In most other zoos two elephants would get shafted with a 1930's era .2 acre dust bowl and an indoor dungeon. This is nothing like that.
i'm presuming that the elephants do get kept indoors for much of the year due to the bronx's location in NYC. i very much doubt ANY indoor facility is adequate long term.
