The polar bear grotto, the one unquestionably awful Bronx Zoo exhibit. There are plenty of award-winning animal habitats at the zoo, but the elderly bear that lives here has perhaps the worst of the lot, and there is nothing award-worthy about the cement pit in this photo.
An award-winning exhibit must be not better than older exhibits because it has won a"price". Or do think an acedemy award winning movie is better than others ? There a a lot of new exhibits at the Bronx-Zoo which are really bad, Jungle World,or Congo to name just two examples.
@Ituri: What Zebraduiker is obviously implying is that a) a newer date does not guarantee a better exhibit, b) one should be careful to regard awards as axiomatic seals of (husbandry) quality and c) some zoochat members should be more careful in their all too subjective rating of exhibits-in particular when they do not know the conditions behind the rather limited visitor's point of view...

I know you don't all out love the Bronx Zoo but to call Congo Gorilla Forest really bad is a bit over the top...Sure it has it's bad points but what exhibit doesn't?
And something I've noticed is that Bronx Zoo seems to be the only zoo that people put 'the' in front of. I did until I realised.
I told heres everal times, how Congo Forest is working. The Okapi exhibit is LOOKING great, no question, but is has NO hiding palces for the okapios and it is TOO small for them, the zoo is keeping 5 OPkapis, whcih have to share one exhibit, some of them come never out in this exhibit, and tehy are in the stalls for seven months, because they only have one tiny outside yard behind the scenes, which they can't use in winter times for several reasons.
All Congo Animals are in stalls for seven months ! I like the idea of an Conco exhibit complex, but with much betetr and biggere xhibits for the hoofstcok and, more importanmt, betetr indoor exhibits and outside yrads for winter times, with indoor viewing for the visitors. So why not doing big indoor natural indoor exhibits for okapis or rhinos ?

If I'm right, the New York borough where the zoo is located is 'The Bronx' rather than 'Bronx', which might explain the introduction of 'the'!
In terms of the wider thread, I would agree with Zebraduiker's points about awards not necessarily counting for much in terms of actual quality, and about needing to take the full operation of the exhibit into consideration. In terms of awards - bear in mind that these are generally given annually - which has the effect that as a rule, one will be won each year. Even if there isn't really an exhibit that deserves it. I won't comment on the Bronx's exhibits in particular, as I'm really not familiar enough to comment.
