Simply brilliant! I remember watching the undergrowth at the back of the exhibit, as suddenly a gorilla or two would burst out of nowhere. Definitely the best great ape enclosure on the planet, as there is nothing in the ZooChat gallery that suggests there is anything else even in the same ballpark. Maybe Disney in second place?
Well this is the best one in America. If one is going to fly overseas to see a better gorilla exhibit, they might as well just go to Central Africa and see the gorillas in the wild. If the pane of glass were absent, this photo could easily pass for a photo of the real Central African rain forest.
Overall, ZD, I'm on Snowleopard's side on your many, many critiques of the Bronx Zoo. You are simply being way too harsh.
But there IS a point taken, Snowleopard. Since you haven't been to all of the many great zoos are the world, maybe you should NOT say "best exhibit on this planet" and confine your exalting to "best exhibit in North America", or since we know there are very few good zoos in South America, you could say "best on this Hemisphere". But until you've seen Singapore, Pretoria, Rotterdam, and all the other excellent European zoos, you shouldn't declare what the planet's best are!
There -- is that a good compromise, or have I made you both mad?
Actually except for Pretoria l think l have seen all the great Gorilla exhibits.
From the public perspective to see a gorilla in a simulated natural enviroment this would be the best and the most expensive in the world.
From the Gorilla perspective of course there is nowhere that comes close to Howletts in my opinion
BTW Anyhuis it has been awhile since Singapore had a very unfourtunate experiance with gorillas. I would think that we might keep our choices of best to exhibits ones that currentley house gorillas.

Rain forests are much more dense than that other than clearings, but yes, it does a great job of looking like a rain forest. If it were as dense as real rain forests typically are, it would be quite hard to even see the gorillas.
@zooman: thanks for the compliment my friend! I think that Sun Wukong has been finally booted off/suspended from this site, so you and I and many others are once again free from his bizarre attacks.
@Zebraduiker: you have a fantastic photo here! It's amazing to think that this shot only shows a portion of one of the two gorilla habitats, as the apes certainly have lots of space at the Bronx.
