@Blackduiker: you are absolutely correct, and why just about anyone who has visited lots of North American zoos places the Bronx in the top 3 on the continent. I've read that this area of the zoo ("Baboon Reserve") is 5 acres in size, but that includes "Somba Village" and its excellent eating area, a terraced viewing platform and a small souvenir stand. My wife and I had lunch at the small restaurant there, and we ate while gazing at the 2.5 acre baboon/ibex/hyrax enclosure. Simply spectacular, and yet not even the best exhibit at the Bronx Zoo!
You should see the Gelada Exhibit at Rheine Zoo in germany, much better than this one....The Bronx Zoo is a big dissapointment to me ! Other guys here said it before, but no one other here has lost any words to the , I don't like to use this word, horrible childrens zoo, its defintely one of the most worse exhibits at the whole zoo. So why noone critise the Bronx for this childrens zoo ? Domestic animals are living creatures as like as the exotic wildlife, and in gods eyes, we are all equal....I'm grown up on a farm with a lot of cattle, and it means tormention of animals to keep herd animals as like as cattle, pigs and horses, all the time alone, a big zoo like the Bronx-Zoo should know it. They critise the single keeping of parrots at private homes in their own bird house, but self they didn't do it better.....Think about it.
It turned out to be a very interesting debate and I would certainly agree that the pictures of the children´s zoo at Bronx don´t look very nice at all, but I am surprised by your criticism of the gelada/ibex/hydrax exhibit. Personally I was totally fascinated by it when I first read about it at Zoolex, and that was before I discovered ZooChat. (And overall my thread pretty much convinced me of what the majority here at ZooChat believes -that Bronx, whatever shortcomings, is one of the best zoos in the world.)
Anyway, you mention a much better exhibit for gelada at Rheine Zoo in Germany. It is not represented in the gallery here at Zoochat, so i googled and found a Naturzoo Rheine. Is this the zoo that you are referring to?
If so, do you have any pictures that you could upload and would you like to expand a bit on why you think their gelada exhibit is much better?
BTW - I checked out all your posts and it seems to me that you and I are very much on the same page - we both seem to primarily focus on animal welfare at zoos and prefer big, spacious enclosures with lots of enrichment for the animals.
