Bronx Zoo 2010 - Part of Indian Rhinoceros exhibit in Wild Asia

Part of Indian Rhinoceros exhibit in Wild Asia. One is lying in the muddy pool to the left. The monorail passes through Wild Asia at the speed of light and with no stops for photos. Therefore it is incredible that I yet managed to take these photos.
How do the trees in the wild Asia section hold up to the animals? I am looking at the pictures and I do not see that many rub marks or damage to them in the pictures.

Traditionally the trees have all had their trunks wrapped with fencing. Quite a number have been lost over the years, though, mostly due to soil compaction and the nature of the topography, soils, etc.

Is it soil compaction due to the animals walking over them or construction, and degradation of the topography and soils due to lack of run off management or events that deal with animal husbandry?

The exhibit opened in 1977 and has had rhinos tromping through it ever since. I think it is remarkable there are any trees left at all.

Good point.

Furthermore, these trees were not planted for the exhibit, the exhibit was carved out of native forest.

Maybe they don't "like" those kinds of trees? But I don't think it'd make a difference in what species of tree it was, because in a rhino's eyes, a tree is a tree and all trees are SCRATCHING POSTS. :p Am I right? The wallow probably offers them enough enrichment, I assume.
