Rapunzel lived in a new exhibit built in 1989 that was connected to the old Elephant House. Unlike any of the other US zoos that received Sumatrans, the Bronx exhibit actually featured dense natural shade. Although it was a bit on the small side, it presented the rhino in a lovely forest setting and provided a good variety of features (pool, mudwallow, tree trunks for rubbing and most importantly. deep shade):

It was a very nice exhibit. When did she pass? I remember seeing her in 2005.

We were fortunate to have Andalas the first Sumatran rhino born at the Cincy Zoo in LA for a couple of years. He used to sit on his haunches like a giant dog.

These are wonderful animals. I really hope that conservation efforts can keep them around the planet. It is unfortunate that the AZA captive breeding program didn't work out.

I think a number of regulars on here would be very interested in any news comng out of Cincinatti Zoo regarding possible further breeding. The female 'Suci' must surely be mature by now. We all know the only male available is her father 'Ipuh' How will they try to breed from her now? Is there any update on this?
