It's nice to see the White Rhinos are finally outdoors. Is this their permanent exhibit, or is it just there until they get an exhibit ready in African Plains?
The rhinoceros' exhibit at the Zoo Center has mud wallows and plenty of space, so I could see them staying there in the end, but, as we mentioned, the former blesbok and oryx exhibits on the African Plains would also be good for them - and they've been empty for years. Exhibiting them there wouldn't be a bad idea at all; as of right now, however, there doesn't seem to be any indication of the rhinos being moved any time soon.

I remember this exhibit as it was a home for Asian elephants (and later Bactrian camels?). IMO, it was a little to small for the elephants (indoors as well), but well structured, with a lot of shade for the mostly forest-dwelling animals (which I miss in Asian-ele-exhibits in many US- and European zoos).
On the other hand, as for savannah animals like white rhinos, this exhibit is probably suboptimal...(?)
I hope that Bronx Zoo will find a way (money) to built a new Asian Elephant Habitat within its walk-thru-grounds (the one at Wild Asia with Monorail only and half of the year access doesn't count) and not let them "phase out". It would be a shame for such a big city.
Absolutely agree. I presume it was the best solution at the moment, to place the rhinos there (temporary).
As for the genders, I couldn't figure it out (I couldn't find an information even on the Bronxzoo homepage). According to some pictures, I would say that at least one is a female.
@BeardsleyZooFan- From what I've heard, the both rhinos are males. They'll play fight a lot, although I'm not sure if females and males also do this.
@zoomaniac- Pffff, never count on the Bronx Zoo's website if you're looking for information. Their's is one of the least informative! They don't even have their entire species list on the site!
As for the elephants, Patty and Maxine (the Bronx's only remaining eles), are middle-aged now. I heard that when they die, the Bronx Zoo has no plans to acquire new elephants due to the amount it would cost to keep them. So I'm doubting that they would build a new exhibit for them. That's unfortunate.
