Some Rodrigues flying foxes roosting in the treetops in Jungleworld. These should not be confused with the Indian flying foxes, which arrived in mid-March and live in the tapir exhibit.

I am not quite sure why these are exhibited in Jungleworld, as they are not from Southeast Asia, but an island in the middle of the Indian Ocean called Rodrigues, which belongs to Mauritius. Is that considered SE Asia?

Not by any stretch of the imagination!

The Mascarenes (Mauritius, Reunion, Rodrigues) are closest to Madagascar and if their species were to be lumped into any larger zoogeographic display it would be better to include them alongside the lemurs, fossas et al. (or, better still, just on their own!).

Yes, the question was a bit rhetorical; I was trying to make a connection to the San Diego Stick Random Animals Wherever Syndrome. (Are you aware of it? :p)

You are right in saying that they should be exhibited on their own. Exhibiting Mascarenes species with Madagascan species is like exhibiting Australian animals with New Zealand animals (which many ZooChatters from that part of the world despise with a passion :D)

Well it's more accurate to lump them with Madagascan species than with southeast Asian ones.

Looking at Jungleworld it seems even Bronx can't keep there geography consistent. Waldrapp ibis, tree kangaroos and fly river turtles also have no business being in that exhibit.

Hm, that is true. Although I never considered the waldrapps part of Jungleworld; just another example of SDSRAWS. :D North African birds in Asia Plaza???

Oddly enough, San Diego Zoo Safari Park actually keeps these animals in their own seperate exhibit, from what I've heard.:eek:

They are now in the Javan Langur exhibit and there are also Falcated Ducks and Philippine Ducks in that exhibit.
