March 2nd 2013- The zoo has closed the amphibian display in zoo center. They have sent the babirusas and tapirs to other parts of the zoo. Currently heavy construction is taking place. The sign shows komodo dragon which is probably what is being held there. It has mor than enough space so it may hold the newly acquired galapagos tortoises to.

I already commented about this in your other photo. Again, it's Aldabra Giant Tortoises, not Galapagos. The zoo already has Galapagos and they're not large enough for them to outside yet. Where did you capture this picture? Through a hole in the wall where the Amphibian exhibit used to be?

There is a small half inch gap in which you could see in. All I could see was cinderblocks being built up into walls. I wonder what will fill the two outdoor exhibits as there was a small amount of supplies piled up in the former tapir yard. This explains why there are 2 tapirs now being held in jungleworld. Thanks for correcting the species of tortoise for me. I wonder what the exhibit will be called and themed after. My guess is something to do with large reptile species. There is a good chance some of the frog species may return in this exhibit. It is great that the zoo is finally constructing something new. I would guess that the exhibit be announced to the public soon.

I asked a volunteer at the zoo around last summer and he said that the tapir prefered to stay inside at zoo center as I had not seen it since the year before. The bronx zoo did send daniella the tapir away in january. They still have 2 tapirs in jungleworld so my guess is the tapir from zoo center went to jungleworld after daniella was sent to another zoo.

I know I heard some people on the Bronx forum talk about how small the false gharial exhibit is. what are the chances they move them over to this exhibit? and just a gut feeling do you think this exhibit will be open by memorial day?

I doubt it because the space is not huge and they would have about an equal sized exhibit if moved here. There may be a better chance of one of the smaller crocodile species next to the gharial moving here. This would increase there exhibits size in the reptile house. The exhibit will probabaly not be open by memorial day I think the last quarter of this year or early next year is a better guess. The exhibits were just started at the beggining of the year and there is lots of work such as rockwork, additional construction and the time for the animals getting adjusted. The bronx zoo can take a while building things especially since this is an older building.

I haven't seen the enclosures being worked on since 2011 but I don't remember them being small. I'd say the False Gharial would get a lot more space if put out here. I mean, these exhibits used to hold tapir and babirusa! I don't think it will be moved here, though. As predicted, I'd say it's Komodo Dragons and Aldabra Giant Tortoises coming in here.

When I wrote that post I was referring to the indoor enclosures. On my last visit there was little noticeable progress on the outdoor enclosures but they would definetly suit giant tortoises.
