The zoo claims this is the only one in New York City, not the whole state. The rest of the city relies on the sewage system. Outside of cities most people do have a similar recycling system to this. I think a lot of it, after filtering through 40 feet or so of soil, goes back into people's wells and is used as drinking water (outside of cities, not at the zoo).

Yes, yes it does. It's the same system we use in my area. Our wastes are sent through our septic tank, where they're broken up, and turned into something called "grey water" which is sent directly through a ton of soil and deposited into gardens and yards and such. Supposedly, once the process is completed, you can safely drink the water and some of it does apparently go back into water wells.
@casarettoaleash, I'm not. New York City uses the sewage system as does all of the zoo's restrooms except this one.
