- It is a small exhibit directly next to the gorilla exhibit. The signage compares humans, gorillas and marmosets as they are all primates.

Is it still open, though? Last time I went the exhibit was closed and dark and the signage was removed.

I don't recall an elephant display but I do recall a big random tree in the middle of the building thought I don't remember there being tusk marks. Do you mean the main room where you first see the gorillas? Sure, it's a large, noisy, and impressive room with a huge crowd always lining the exhibit glass.

The next time I'll be there will probably be the weekend before September 18th because that's when my membership expires for the year.

- I visited the zoo yesterday amd there are several boards of infromation and photographs of the africam forest elephant oppisite the 2nd okapi viewing point just short of entering the main building.

Hmm... I've always paid more attention to the animals in that part so I'm not surprise I've missed it. I'll try to keep an eye out next time I go.

- The exhibit must have reopened as the signage was back up and there was food in the exhibit. But i did not see one.

Hi Thylo, next time you are in Congo Forest if you think about it could you take some pictures of the forest elephant display that they have in there with the model tree that looks like it has been tusked by the elephant and the big theater that opens up to the view of the gorilla exhibit?

I don't think that anyone has posted any pictures of these show elements.

David

These are two different artificial trees in two different parts of "Congo."

The tree with the shredded wood to tell the story of forest elephants as keystone species is, as was said, opposite the main okapi viewing outdoors.

The other, on the approach to the indoor theater, has a big cut out of it (and if I remember correctly a chain saw on the ground) to present the issues of logging.

Hi Zooplantman,

I am curious in some aerial shots/plans of the gorilla exhibits they seem allot deeper than l thought when viewing them, are they very deep?

By deep I assume you mean distance from the viewer: yes the gorilla exhibits do extend far back but the very rear of the first one (remember it ends in a hill in the rear?) is hotwired off (at the top of the hill so they can't disappear into the rear moat)
The aerial shot might make it appear that it is available to the animals all the way to the rear moat wall

There is an older photo in Zoolex of the theater:

Thx Zooplantman,

Yes distance from viewing windows.

If you look at this image from the blog of fellow-zoochat member uszoo
http://bronxzoofan.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/both-gorilla.jpg
you get an idea of the size of the two gorilla exhibits. You can barely see the line of trees in the purple area, along the lower edge. The gorillas are prevented from entering that tree area. The rest is theirs

In the other exhibit (brown? orange?) they have access to perhaps 95% of it
