World of Darkness?

I suppose the zoo just never had the drive to remove this from the sign. They also didn't have the drive to point this in the correct direction since it was pointing to a gated off section of the zoo:p

There was still at least one sign for World of Darkness still evident when I was there last week. I also sneakily jumped the barriers to get a close look at the closed house. Interesting design. A keeper told me that they are (pending funding) considering re-opening it at some point. Why did it shut in the first place. Not like they needed the space!

I really hope they do reopen it, though it probably won't be anything like it once was.

It closed along with several other exhibits and a skyline due to the city reducing the zoo's funding, which caused them to not be able to afford keeping for much stuff open. They lost a lot of great species that year (2009)

Anybody know what was held in World Of Darkness prior to its closing? And how big a building are we talking?

nocturnal houses are pretty expensive to run.

Thanks for the info Thylo.

What other exhibits were closed at the same time?

The zoo's skyline, an exhibit featuring Arabian Oryx and Formosan Sika Deer, and I believe a trail featuring hoofstock off above the Aquatic Bird House. Of course, I could be wrong as I didn't start visiting until after this. Lots of individual species left as well.

@ThylacineAlive

If I recall correctly, it wasn't Formosan sika deer that were taken off exhibit but the bontebok near the Arabian oryx in the African area. I always remember the sika deer being viewed from the monorail.

The reason I say that is 1) I remember bontebok when I visited in the 1990s, and 2) I specifically remember an article mentioning WoD, Arabian oryx, and bontebok (or was it blesbok?) as species or exhibits no longer at the zoo during the recession.
