Starry Night Cichlid

Paratilapia bleekeri I think. As far as I'm aware the marakely is P. polleni (rather smaller with very small blue spots).

The first Malagasy Paratilapia to be imported for aquaria was the small-spotted form which was known as polleni. I first heard about them in a lecture that Paul Loiselle gave to the British Cichlid Association about 20 years ago, and I was fascinated by his description and photos of these rare and beautiful fish. Through contacts in the trade I bought some youngsters, which grew into equally beautiful, but larger and large-spotted fish, which were eventually renamed bleekeri, as in the photo. Unfortunately while the original polleni are relatively mild-mannered, bleekeri are extremely aggressive to each other and mine came to sticky ends (the worst experience of my fishkeeping career). Whether the names are valid or not, they are certainly different species. Other fishes of similar appearance have been imported from other areas of Madagascar and some DNA samples have been analysed, but I don't know the current state of play.
