Gelada Troop

Baboon Reserve: Gelada Troop. May 22, 2016.
Interest in keeping geladas in zoos is increasing (at least as I read, for Europe), how many zoos in the USA holds geladas?

They are attractive animals, particularly males with the red chests.

At the moment, Bronx is the only zoo in the US with Geladas. However, San Diego will be going into them once the new African exhibit is completed.

I think the zoo did receive the 5 males, but what they really need now are new females!

They can even import some wild animals, I think; usually there are no bans on non-human primate imports (except maybe for highly treatened species, or species like gorillas or chimpanzees/bonobos) from their native countries, as it is case with ungulates and elephants, and in most cases, also with birds (veterinary reasons above all).

Why not some 2.6 geladas do not be imported from Ethiopia, for example, if not from Europe.

From what I've heard Ethiopia hasn't allowed the export of live animals in a while so I don't think getting Geladas from the wild would be possible.

We got Ethiopian mountain vipers, but that's been it for perhaps around half a century.
