South African Nile Crocodile

Wait what? Do they have new crocodiles in Madagascar! because the usual pair are South African, C. n. cowei. Has something really exciting happened!?

Does any zoo in the US (or any, really, outside Madagascar) have Madagascar Nile crocodile, besides the supposed 1.0 at the Capital of Texas Zoo?

Two places in Europe, actually - but I believe it is not on-record that the "non-subspecific" Nile at the other collection are Malagasy so I have never altered the listing.

Thanks, both of you. I suppose it's lucky that I saw the one at COT Zoo if they are that rare.

what's the deal with Madagascar crocodiles? I see from Mr. Google that there are numerous crocodile farms on the island and lots have been exported from there alive (and also to a crocodile farm set up on Mauritius). So surely there must be lots of Madagascar crocodiles in zoos? Or were the farms set up with imported African crocodiles (or a combination)?

It doesn't really matter as it is even questionnable whether the Madagascar ssp is actually distinct at all from the mainland population...

Funny enough, I have heard the reverse; that it looks like the preliminary data suggests it might go the way of suchus and end up with full species status.
