Wow, this grotto doesn't even have substrate. Generally in grottoes like this the big brown bears pace all day long with the occasional swim. I know this from watching Cleveland's Grizzly bears who are in an exhibit with no substrate and a small pool.
What I don´t understand is why zoos who still have these horrible exhibits, just don´t use the obvious option to improve them - if ever so slightly. Simply, everyday shove in some natural substrates with for instance food items hidden in them. One or two big heaps of gravel with a few interesting things for the bears to look for. Would keep them interested at least for a while and would be such a simple thing to do.
Anyone who read the thread Snowleopard's Epic Road Trip will comprehend how much disdain I have for the god-awful grottoes that can still be found at countless zoos. Hopefully enrichment is utilized in those types of enclosures, because the alternative is unthinkable. The bears and big cats that are commonly found in such pits would be bored out of their minds.
