There's no dying the gorilla exhibit lacks vegetation, beside above the exhibit which the gorillas don't have access to. So either the gorillas found a way back the hotwire, or their keepers gave them some nice enrichment.

It's little over a half of the exhibit. There's more on the right. The keepers would like the zoo to eventually have an outdoor exhibit for the gorillas as well, but it probably won't happen any time soon. I spoke to someone who works at the zoo today and they didn't have a productive summer with visitors so they are low on money.
But to get back to your questions, they have 4 and 1/2 gorillas. Koga, the male, Lily, Becky, Sidney, and her two month old baby.

I'm sure that the keepers would love their gorillas to have Congo Gorilla Forest. But it isn't up to them, is it?
Looking through this gallery, I'm about ready to declare this zoo unfit to house the bears, elephants and gorillas. If they don't have the money to provide adequate enclosures, they shouldn't have the animals.

A "productive summer" would hardly be sufficient to build even a rudimentary outdoor exhibit--that will take millions of dollars that would have to come from donations or government grants

You cannot always look at pictures and declare an exhibit unfit for housing a a particular animal. The gorilla exhibit is better than it appears and because it wraps around a circle there is no way to show the entire enclosure in one shot as far as bears and elephants are concerned alot is to be desired but they are no worse than many other zoos.We also are of the understanding that polar bears is the next major projects to be done here any one have any info on that ?

With all of the excellent, massive gorilla enclosures in American zoos that are either brilliant, packed with family troops OR at least an acre in size (Bronx, Disney, Woodland Park, Lincoln Park, Kansas City, North Carolina, Busch Gardens, Louisville, Dallas, Cheyenne Mountain, Detroit, Sedgwick County, San Diego, Denver, San Francisco, Atlanta, Saint Louis, Riverbanks, Gladys Porter, etc) it seems to me that there are almost innumerable satisfactory gorilla exhibits scattered all across the U.S.A. The all-indoor enclosure at the Buffalo Zoo is not only the worst gorilla exhibit I've ever seen with my own eyes, it is a strong contender for the most awful major mammal enclosure of any AZA-accredited zoo.
The ancient bear pits and barren elephant yard at this hugely disappointing zoo aren't much better, but the good news is that the new rainforest building is excellent!
Thanks for your feedback. Team Tapir. Although I know the exhibit is inadequate, I don't think it's one of the worst exhibits in a US Zoo. But I'm won't go into it anymore because I know it's just a losing battle.
As for any news on the Arctic Exhibit, a couple of days ago I was going to say I doubted it'd happen anytime soon. I know the zoo is lacking money and I thought it may take awhile (since it was mentioned a couple months ago they were just starting to make designs for the exhibit). They were going to really take an initiative if the female polar bear had a baby, but it looks like it was a false alarm. Although I don't think that should be the deciding factor since the exhibit needs an overhaul regardless of a new addition to the bears. But with the article posted mentioning the steps taken by Buffalo to help get this project off the ground, perhaps it will happen sooner that I thought. But my hope is that the Arctic exhibit happens before the new entrance is completed. I could deal with the old one as I rather see the well being of the animals over visitors. Despite the shortcomings of the exhibit, I do love this time of year for the polar bears. Instead of pacing around you can see them play in the snow. Also it's mating season so the two bears actually interact and like each other.
I have to say this in not one of the best gorilla exhibits in the world, but you have got to remember that Buffalo is a smaller zoo, and at the time this was a big deal for them. Honestly at least the exhibit looks somewhat naturalistic compared to some zoos that still use Bars and cages. The good news is that eventually they will see a renovation its just a matter of how long that will be unfortunately.
