Savanna

I just love this view at the zoo. In one glance you can see Giraffes, Greater Kudu, and Gerenuk in one habitat. Behind them you get to see 3 White Rhinos, and behind them African Elephants. Maybe one of the best Savannas out there.

I don't know, that chainlink fence near the Giraffe kind of spoils it for me. Look's like something ready to be removed. I've seen much nicer.

My guess is that the fence has to be there due to the Greater Kudus. I know Kudu can jump over fences a little shorter than this. I might could be done a little more artfully, but I don't think it is that bad of an eyesore.

There are far more scenic African vistas at many other North American zoos, and many with no obivous barriers at all. At zoos like Miami and Woodland Park one can walk around for an hour in the African areas and not see more than one or two tiny fences, as everything is moated and the barriers are all hidden from view. The ugly chain fence here at Cameron Park pretty much destroys any sense of realism, but at least the paddocks appear to be fairly spacious.

and at Dineys animal kingdom, it is impossible to see fences

yep i agree.

so nothing special about this. that fence says it all......

And honestly, those wooden posts that are so commonly used in zoos are not a whole lot better than the chain link fencing. Nothing a backhoe and a little imagination couldn't have fixed.....

I agree that the aesthetics of the exhibitry are somewhat lacking, but with just a few modifications to the fencing this could be a spectacular area. Maybe that will be one of the next projects that the zoo undertakes.
