I say arctic foxes and you realize a few years ago Gus had a partner who was put down because some stupid teenager jumped in at like 2:30am and was assaulted by the bear. So this exhibit could've had a polar bear if that teenager knew his own good.
When was this revamped? I don't remember it from my visit in 1980, sadly I suspect before a lot of you were even born I do recall a bear being shot for the idiot who jumped in, I thought both bears had been shot though. Has it happend more than once?

As Shirokuma said, the zoo was shut down for several years.
The entire zoo that you saw was literally bulldozed and rebuilt from scratch, so you would not have seen this polar bear exhibit in 1980.
The then-New York Zoological Society (now Wildlife Conservation Society) completely rebuilt the Prospect Park Zoo where the awful polar bear event happened and the Queens Zoo also.

As mentioned before, not Gus' partner. Gus had two partners: Lily and Ida. Lily was put down due to health issues and Ida died of old age. I'm not even sure how one would have ever been able to climb into Gus' enclosure.
I quite like zoo landscaping, I have spent ages lately looking at the Dallas zoo gallery on here. It can intrigue me as to how they do it, and what stops the animal escaping etc. so if the lion or bear is a sleep I can look at the set up and dream of the day I can do something like it for my own zoo (fat chance though). As long as the animal is occupied I can enjoy the zoo as theater as much as drama theater if the play is dull but the set design is good I can at least enjoy the set.
