Polar Bear Exhibit

I say redo the entire thing and make it Amur tigers.

Go to Bronx and see Tiger Mountain. Go to CPZ and see this 80's exhibit? Makes no sense. It is small and was good for the 80's, I guess. By adding Amur Tiger, needs taller walls or mesh. Will make it feel/look small.

From comments made by informed sources it sounds like it is going to become a brown bear exhibit.

That will keep a charismatic megamammal as the centerpiece of the zoo.

Brown bears are as exciting as polar bears, in my opinion.

Agreed but it's kinda a waste considering Bronx already has two kinds of Brown Bear in a much better enclosure.

From commentary posted here it sounds like the Central Park Zoo audience is quite different from the Bronx Zoo audience (i.e., CPZ is mostly tourists who likely wouldn't be visiting the Bronx Zoo).

If that is the case then you are probably not duplicating the zoo experience for most visitors to CPZ, which explains why CPZ has a fairly similar collection to the Bronx Zoo with sea lions, snow leopards, a miniature Jungle World, etc.; and both zoos had polar bears until recently, so nothing would really change in terms of duplicated bear exhibits.

I suppose you're right. That's kind of odd considering Bronx is generally considered a better zoo. All of the WCS collections hold sea lions and I wouldn't call the Tropical Zone a mini JungleWorld since it's just tropical species from all over.

I quite agree.
Only zoo enthusiasts see the two zoos as one collection. WCS walks the line between attempting to give each of its facilities its own identity and making each a destination interesting to its particular audience.

That sucks to hear that. THat was by far the best exhibit at central park zoo. They'd be crazy not to get another polar bear.

1. In the modern world of zoos, this exhibit is a bit outdated and the amount of space isn't ideal for a Polar Bear. This was probably the most popular exhibit at CPZ, but not the best.
2. There is a shortage of Polar Bears in American zoos, and other zoos have been waiting for them before Gus died at Central Park.
3. It sucks to hear what? That Gus has died (old news) or that Brown Bears will probably occupy this exhibit (recent news)? The first does suck, but the second doesn't suck at all.

I'd definitely say I like the Snow Leopard enclosure much better. And the sea ducks enclosure is large for them and suits them nicely I'd think.
