When I was last at this zoo a keeper said that this area may eventually be turned into an exhibit for their Mountain Tapirs, which were displaced by the new elephant area.

The exhibit would perhaps need a major overhaul to accommodate tapirs, and I wondered where those beauties had disappeared to! I assumed that Los Angeles was the last zoo in the nation with the species.

You are correct! By mid-summer the zoo's two Mountain Tapirs (currently off exhibit) will be in this renovated enclosure that used to hold lions. I saw the Mountain Tapirs when I visited the zoo in 2010 but on my 2014 visit they had been moved to an off-show area.
