Transvaal Lion

Africa!- Transvaal Lion. July 11, 2013. This is the new male named John from the Smithsonian National Zoo. He is getting more used to his enclosure (which isn't that much larger than his old one in D.C.) but I noticed that he passes alone the same, well worn trail in his enclosure.

the lions were not in the original plans

Just wondering, was that a question?:) If so, no they were not part of the plan. Olive baboons and a walk-through aviary were going to be where the cheetahs are. The cheetahs were supposed to be where the lions are. A kopjie exhibit was going to be in front of the African Plains. The wild dogs, crocodiles, and hippos remained.

I also said they needed to make it smaller because otherwise if it wasn't, there would be a risk having very small hippo and wild dog exhibits.

Ridiculous. the dogs and hippo will still have small exhibits. Cincy does whatever the minimum size is that is acceptable. if they stopped giving all the visitors so much space and amenities, maybe they would not get criticized so much. leopards were also part of the original plans for africa. thankfully, the leopards and baboons were spared.

The zoo gives more space for their animals more than their visitors. How about maybe visiting the zoo. I know someone that just recently did and actually visiting changed his mind on some things.

Where did you hear that they were getting leopards. The map doesn't show that.

he is right the original plans did have leopards where the lions are now and back then there was no plans for crocs

I think we all need to remember that this zoo is one of the oldest in the country and thus is going to have outdated and small enclosures. While today they're viewed as unfit, some we seen as great exhibit back when they were built. I honestly don't think this Lion enclosure is that bad. Is it the best? No. Is it the worst? Certainly not. It's a pretty average enclosure and is alright for 1.1 Lions. When someone reads what has been posted by others who've not even visited the zoo they would think the zoo is horrible but, in all honesty, I didn't find a couple of the exhibits horribly criticized by members on here to be all that bad. I do agree, though, that the zoo needs to start getting into a more renovation-type mindset. Once Africa! is completed (and I think it's going to turn out pretty fine), I think the zoo should build that parking garage ASAP so they can build a new, proper elephant exhibit. Maybe then they can turn the elephant house into a better reptile house. All I'm saying is that they are an old zoo that needs time to improve. They've already done a nice job with the opening of Jungle Trails, Manatee Springs (which I think is a fantastic exhibit), World of Insects, and the new Cat Canyon. I think some of you are being a bit too harsh on the zoo and its exhibits and everyone (Moebelle included) needs to take a big breath here and calm down. Personally, and I deeply apologize if this is incorrect, I think a bit of this anger towards the zoo is coming out of anger over the whole Cinzoo man-Moebelle thing.

the two most criticised parts of the Cincinnati Zoo are the Night Hunters building and the reptile house. The buildings may be old, but the exhibits/choice of current inhabitants are not. You can't argue that sticking a fossa in a tiny cage is excusable because the cage is an old one - what one should do is instead put in an animal more suitable for the size of the cage! That is why Cincinnati gets criticised so much, for its very many poor housing choices and its decisions to keep cramming more animals into too little space.

The Reptile House is pretty damn bad, I'll give you that. Many of the Night Hunters enclosures are a bit small as well but, in person, many didn't really seem all too bad. In the case of the Fossa, you are right again. The Fossa enclosure is quite small. Other enclosures like the Tayra one, though, aren't really bad. I don't see how the elephant exhibit isn't criticized more than Night Hunters!
