Jun. 2013 - Africa - Africa Plains + Vulture Island + Lion Exhibits

Phase III, or the lion and cheetah exhibit are complete. They will open on June 29th. The African Plains will hold zebras, gazelles, ostriches, crowned cranes, Marabou storks, and other hoofstock. The vulture exhibit can be seen in the bottom right corner where the log is. This will open in June of 2014 as Phase IV. Although it looks like they could open it now. The main reason they can't is because well obviously the zoo doesn't have the species, the fencing isn't complete, and the holding areas aren't built.

Is the hoofed stock yard pretty sizable? Bigger than the old Veldt? I really hope the get a cool antelope species or two. i'll be disappointed is ends up being a few zebras with a herd of Thommies and a few birds sprinkled in.

If you are referring to the now Indian rhino, okapi, and bongo exhibits in Rhino Reserve, then that exhibit was about 26,000 feet². The African Plains will be about 50,000 feet²/1.15 acres.

That's the exhibit that I was referring to. I'd love to see an old species list from the Veldt. I remember the eland and zebras, but it seems like there was more other than the birds.

The zoo is pushing the hippo exhibit back another year (2016) so they can save more money and build a better enclosure. The meerkat and wild dog exhibits will be ready in August.

The fencing for guest viewing spots is 100% done but the rock wall fencing to totally keep the hoofstock in is constructed but needs to still dry and be painted.

Have you any photos of this unfinished rock wall Moebelle? I'm always interested in how they do this and the before and after shots help get a better idea of how it turns out.
Thanks.

Yes I do. I will send you a link after work:) And the process is very interesting, and it turns out that rock walls at zoos are a lot thinner than they appear. First you build a foundation by using skinny poles (usually they're slightly curved upward), you slab on the grey substance (shotcrete?)with a paintbrush along that foundation, you wait a day to let it dry, then you paint it over with whatever you may please. I was vague explaining this, but I will get you that photo.

Thanks Moebelle I have a DVD on making artificial rock work in gardens, it does fascinate me how it is done. My aviary at home, when completed, is going to have mock rock walls so I can have birds and Herps, the herps then won't be able to reach the wire and squeeze through. So i need as much visual help as possible with my ideas.

The final species list is out for the African Plains exhibit! (from the website)
Lesser Kudu, Impala, Thompson’s Gazelle, Ostrich, Crested Guineafowl, Pink-backed Pelican (from Jungle Trails), and Ruppell’s and Lappet-faced Vultures.
