They have a choice to leave the island if they wanted to. This was taken at 7:10 so I was surprised to see them out to early. Behind them this African Plains exhibit will eventually hold ostriches, Crested Guineafowl, Crowned cranes, impala, Lesser Kudu, and Thompson's gazelles.
It looks nice, but I honestly do not understand why they still use vultures that are not able to fly, in a mixed exhibit. It seems quite common in US zoos, but it is completely not good from an animal welfare point...

Two reasons, one, they would escape with ease, and two, if they were able to fly even just the tiniest bit, there's a chance they could fly into the Lion moat.
That's a good point that shouldn't be thought of twice. I've never once seen such an exhibit though. The only time I've seen a flying vulture was during Cincy's bird show.
