They have a choice to leave the island if they wanted to. This was taken at 7:10 so I was surprised to see them out to early. Behind them this African Plains exhibit will eventually hold ostriches, Crested Guineafowl, Crowned cranes, impala, Lesser Kudu, and Thompson's gazelles.

It looks nice, but I honestly do not understand why they still use vultures that are not able to fly, in a mixed exhibit. It seems quite common in US zoos, but it is completely not good from an animal welfare point...

Two reasons, one, they would escape with ease, and two, if they were able to fly even just the tiniest bit, there's a chance they could fly into the Lion moat.

The point is that they should not even try to keep vultures in such exhibits, but keep them in a large aviary...

That's a good point that shouldn't be thought of twice. I've never once seen such an exhibit though. The only time I've seen a flying vulture was during Cincy's bird show.

June 2014....

Couldn't agree more; vultures should be in aviaries, not flight restricted in open exhibits.

you have never seen a vulture kept in an aviary before?! Is that true or did you mis-type something else?

All but a King Vulture at the Milwaukee Zoo now that I think about it but nothing like a Ruppell's or any African vulture species.

The LA Zoo keeps a nice group of about 15 Cape Griffon Vultures in a large aviary. The sound that they make when they all fly at once is amazing.

Unfortunately they won't be on display anymore as the Rainforest of the Americas was built right in front of their aviary.
