The zoo is not rotating Harry with the hog between yards. They want him to have both the left yard and the private yard at all time.

Has there been any announcement or rumor of when the last Sumatran rhino will be leaving for Sumatra?

Someone asked that today too in the news feed. No, the Sumatran Rhino news has been quiet ever since Suci's death.

Harry prefers his cool indoor stalls over the outdoor yards. So, since the larger stalls are connected to the left and private yards, those are the ones he has access to. He doesn't like the large right yard very much.

I spoke with the rhino specialists a couple of weeks ago. They had a lot of info. Basically Dr. Roth is heading back to S.E. Asia this summer to go over what to do with the remaining animals. The species has become the most in dire-straits conservation program in the world now (with the Javan rhinos) and the Indonesians and Malaysians are doing a terrible job at managing their extremely scarce surviving animals (3 known left in Borneo, and a couple dozen left in Sumatra with possibly 5-10 possible fertile females left alive). Right now there are no fertile females the Indonesians would pair Harry up with, the animals in their captive care are being badly managed, the risk of deadly disease and natural disasters is extremely high (most of the Bornean rhinos died from a surra outbreak just a few years ago), the risk of poaching is skyrocketing, and the Indonesians won't cooperate properly with anyone at the moment. As such, and desiring to keep an ambassador animal here to raise awareness and direly needed funds for the program, the zoo is not eager to let Harry go. Not right away. I agree and hope they hold him as long as possible, as the situation in S.E. Asia is terrible. Should it be decided in the next few weeks that Harry be sent to S.E. Asia as soon as possible for whatever reason, it would be at least until next spring before he could leave at the earliest.

This exhibit will soon contain Capybaras and they will be presented as Zoo Babies
