There is not an outdoor area, but the enclosure is perhaps 4 times larger than what is shown. The Primate, Cat + Aquatics Building at the Cleveland Zoo is a strong candidate for one of the all-time worst zoo buildings in America, as many intelligent primates are kept indoors on cement for their entire lives.
Let's not forget that the Cleveland Zoo also has one of the strongest enrichment programs of any zoo, and lets also not forget that after African Elephant Crossing opens, new primate exhibits are the next thing to be built.
I'm sure the primary limitation for Cleveland, as for most zoos, is securing adequate funding. The $10-30 million it will take to do a modern facility for their extensive primate collection will be a challenge to raise in this brutal economy.
