RainForest Building - Bornean Orangutan Exhibit

July 27th, 2010.
This photo, taken through scratched glass, shows a fair portion of the orangutan exhibit. I have always been disappointed to see great apes without any outdoor access, so automatically this enclosure is weak in my opinion. Also, there are not many "vines" or ropes for the apes to utilize as they traverse their habitat, as the majority of the climbing structures on the "tree" are thick mock-rock obstructions that serve more as ledges to sit on rather than thinner sway poles that are used in better orang exhibits. There is are huge skylit windows but almost everything is human-made in the enclosure. At Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle (hailed by some as the #1 orang exhibit in North America) the orangutans have a large outdoor exhibit that is packed with grass, wood, trees, etc, and therefore it does not rely on large piles of concrete for the apes to sit on.
