From 1909-1978 the zoos apes were housed in the Cleveland Zoos Main Building which originally sat where the current main gate picnic area now exists. The Main Building was an dungeon with zero outdoor access for most of its residents. It was demolished in 1979.
The Primate and Cat Building was built in 1978 and from 1978-1996 no great apes had outdoor access.
The orangutans moved from the first exhibit on the right to the zoos Rainforest in 1992 (where they still have zero outdoor access)at which time the gorillas moved into the old orangutan exhibit and Hamadryas Baboons moved into the center exhibit.
In 1996 a outdoor gorilla exhibit was built.
In the winter the Gorillas occupy the first exhibit shown here on the right.
