Polar Frontier Construction, Viewing Shelter

In the middle of this picture is a gray concrete building. This will be a two story viewing shelter that over looks the Kodiak Bear exhibit. This enclosure will be just under an acre and will feature two male Kodiak Bears, already at the zoo, Brutus and Buckeye. They have outgrown their current 2,000 sq. ft. yard.

Is there any "Polar Frontier" concept art floating out there on the web anywhere?

The only concept art I have seen was on the old Columbus Zoo website. It showed a few images. But when we switched to the new website it was lost. Frankly, I really dont like our new website, because the press is slow (well actually no press releases have happened since the web switch) and the animal info area presents animals by themselves not regions.

Yeah, to be honest I always thought their current website was a step down from the previous version.

I snapped a picture from inside North America (click on the link), looking at the polar frontier construction. This cleared area is what used to be the Timber Wolves habitat. Are they the ones moving into the Kodiak bears space?

I'll add that any sort of rendering on the website would be nice.

While the entire Timber Wolf exhibit was torn down, it will be re-built. They just couldn't fit all the construction equipment if they had only torn down half the exhibit. The three existing bear yards will be renovated once Polar Frontier and the new Timber Wolf yard is complete. I'll add more photos of this area later.

Cool, sounds great.

Any info on how that service road will remain, or how it will be built into the PF entrance?

Also does this all mean we are getting more bears than just the polar variety?

The service road will not be moved, it will just be gated on either side (there really isn't anything else we can do). And with the addition of Polar Bears we will have all three North American bear species. We might get another Black or Brown bear but not until the bear yard renovations are complete. If you have any more questions please feel free to Private Message me.
