Drills

This is Lyle and Eschu, two of our Drills. The Columbus Zoo acquired drills a few years back in hopes of breeding them and saving the captive population. We have had no such luck, and we are positive the problem is the male. The females can still breed so they are going to Edinburgh hopefully very soon. Lyle's fate has yet to be determined. They are not on exhibit and are being housed in the Gorilla building.

Wow, that male is impressive! Too bad they may disappear from North America. Are they being phased out, or is it just because it's hard to breed them?

It's really both, if they were breeding we could probably keep them. Our best bet is for the European population to swell, by sending most of the US collection there, and hopefully if their population grows we can phase them into the US again.

One of the females(I think its the other one, Nora) bred recently at Edinburgh Zoo but no news on the baby's sex, though she is rearing it well.

What eventually happened to the Columbus male?

No, they are not difficult to keep, but most institutions have problems breeding them.
