Bonobo Cage Six

This is a look inside one of the indoor bonobo "cages." We took out the wood climbing structures and added playground equipment (we even have a slide!) This is to provide enrichment for our group, to increase sanitation, and to amuse visitors and show that bonobos are very similar to us. We have only done this renovation to one cage, the other one will be done by summer.

When I visited the Columbus Zoo last summer I was not as big of a fan of these smaller enclosures for the bonobos due to the playground equipment that was in the exhibit, but at least such materials keep the apes active. The huge outdoor enclosure is the best bonobo habitat in North America, and there must be around a dozen bonobos at this zoo.

The Columbus Zoos indoor Bonobo exhibit was built in 1992 where it originally housed two Giant Pandas on loan from China. The exhibit was converted to indoor housing for bonobos in 1998 as part of phase 1 of the African Forest which included gorillas and bonobos.Whether or not anything was exhibited here from 93-98 is unclear.
