Domestic Dog

August 2010: The Wonders of Wildlife show that ran during the summer of 2010 had a focus on which species were bad pets (examples: Snapping Turtle, Alligator, Hawk) and good ones (Rats, this Dog, etc.). This dog was on loan from a shelter. The dog's appearance in the show increased awareness of shelter dogs, and helped her land a good home.

This sounds like a win-win for the dog and the zoo.

Dogs can make good additions to zoos. Houston Zoo had a dog that hung around with their Asian elephants. The LA Zoo had a golden retriever puppy that they brought in as a companion for a maned wolf pup several years ago. Some zoos have dogs in their farm areas. Several years ago the Happy Hollow Zoo had an exhibit of long-haired dachshunds.

Plus dogs make great companions for orphaned Cheetah cubs.
I hope Beardsley will continue doing summer shows. They haven't done one since 2010, and they really gain interest from the public. While on the topic of pets in zoos, I wish they could find a way to educate people with that cat in the New England Farmyard that's never on exhibit.
