April 2013. For details, see my review http://www.zoochat.com/22/review-dallas-world-aquarium-350667/ . This exhibit contains Antillean manatee, Arrau side-necked turtle, Arapaima, Pacu, Red-tailed catfish, Fork-snouted catfish, Shovel-nosed catfish, Black-banded leporinus, and Polka-dot stingray.
geomorph, do you remember what kind of manatee it was that the Steinhart had in the early 1980s? Was that an Antillean manatee also?

David Brown, Steinhart had an Amazon manatee for 17 years, although I never saw it since it died in 1984 and my first trip there was in 2001.

Thanks geomorph. I remember seeing the manatee on my first visit to the Steinhart in 1982 but I didn't know enough to realize that he was really unusual in captivity - I was just thrilled to see a manatee full stop.

Thanks for your photos and great review of Dallas World Aquarium. I hope to come over and see this manatee sometime.

Not counting the dugong on the other side of the world, are all our new world manatees (Florida, etc) just subspecies or are there different species? And how many species/subspecies are there?

Arizona Docent, there are three manatee species; the West Indian manatee is one and is divided into two or three subspecies, including the Florida manatee and the Antillean manatee.

Three manatees (West Indian, Amazon, West African) plus the dugong.
