how does this exhibit work? Is this a fenced-off area to keep the hawk-eagles separate from the other animals? And are there better vantage points when viewing than this one of the ceiling beams?

They have five eagle species at the Aquarium. The canopy of the Mundo Maya exhibit has exhibits for at least two, whilst there is a harpy eagle aviary near the jaguar. To my knowledge, black and white hawk eagle is best viewed from the entrance of the exhibit. Some of the other canopy creatures include spectacled owls in their own exhibit, and a lot of free flight birds (most of the hummingbirds, quetzals, tanagers, woodepeckers, etc.). It is unlikely that there will ever be a clear view (without ceiling things) unless the aquarium redoes their exhibits.
