They've had two in the past, but now I'm not sure. If there are still two, they rotate. I'm not positive about the breeding laws, but they wouldn't breed anyways because they are siblings. I'm not sure of their sexes.
@jayjds2, Would it be possible to have these 2 be part of the European EEP as it is dealing with Antillean/Carribean manatees. What is the story behind the acquisition of the twins (1.1?)? From where and how did they end up at the Dallas World Aquarium.
@Kifaru Bwana I’m fairly certain it’s just one individual now, who came to DWA quite some time ago. I don’t know much about manatees but I imagine it’s past breeding age. To my understanding both animals were rescues from Venezuela that were then imported into the US. Even if it was possible for this animal to breed, the USA’s strict marine mammal laws would likely make participation in the EEP difficult.
@jayjds2, How about an export ... as right now the USFWS Endangered Species Act (guessing... ???) directive is not exactly in the interest of species conservation?
@Kifaru Bwana that could be more likely from a legal point, but I think less likely in actuality. Why would DWA give up one of their most crowd-drawing animals, without a good replacement?
