I still question the way they did the "observation towers" and the unfortunate and unnecessary shade structures, but these details can be overlooked given the drama and beauty of the overall scenario.
How did the grass get re-established? Were the animals pulled off exhibit for a period?
The far right area was left alone from the original planting.
The left was sodded and animals excluded from just that area for a few weeks. So all animals remained on exhibit, but some of the exhibit was protected briefly.
I agree, the keeper towers really ruin the otherwise outstanding view. Same with the shade structures, but as you may already know, they were not originally there and were forced upon the zoo by a USDA inspector after an animal rights extremist complained.
