Taken 6/8/16. This an an Asian-themed exhibit complex that opened in 2012. The major feature of the complex is a connected series of 5 large yards for rotating 3 species: Asian Elephant, Greater On-horned Rhinoceros, and Malayan Tapir. The tapirs also have there own additional smaller yard exclusively for them, and 9 other exhibits for other species are interspersed in the complex.

Did you get to see any gibbons brachiating over the pathway? Do you know if they regularly use this aspect of their exhibit?

They were certainly brachiating between the two islands that are connected over the water, but I did not see them go to the third island which is reached over the visitor pathway!

Is the exhibit on the right hand side of the photo the only one on this side of the path? Does the zoo feed them on this island or offer any enrichment? If not, then I can't really see what would entice them to brachiate over the visitor path.

The island on the right in the photo is the only part of the exhibit on that side, I'm not sure if the water is shallow enough for a keeper to wade through the water to reach the island easily or if it requires a small boat? I suspect it gets less attention than the other two islands.

A really in depth photo tour of what looks to be an amazing exhibit, thank you Geomorph.

Does the water smell?

Where the gate in the fence is there may be a sunken walkway to make it easy for keepers to get to the island.

When i was there there were a handfull of zoo employees cleaning the water feature while the pool was empty and the walkway was closed down. While I didn't notice an offensive smell there was loads of muck being scraped out.

@PAT The gibbons do brachiate over the path frequently, especially the female who loves to leave surprises on unsuspecting guests;)
