I've read before that the Detroit Zoo has the largest chimpanzee enclosure in North America, but the Kansas City Zoo has a 3-acre exhibit that must be close in size. Anyway, the area for the chimps is massive but is too barren. There are a few huge trees, which lets the apes see halfway across the zoo, but the open field aspect of the enormous enclosure is a disappointment.

While it does look big, the lack of climbing opportunities is disappointing. I prefer the look of the one acre chimp exhibits at Monkey World as the climbing frames in them are complex amd offer many different levels for the chimpanzees.
I think it would be very good if they built a large climbing frame in Detroit's chimp enclosure.
