The Penguinarium opened in 1968 with a group of 30 penguins of 5 different species, but within a few months (and thanks to an Antarctic expedition) there were 60 birds of 7 different species. At the time this might well have been America's premier penguin habitat, but now it is 44 years old and I've heard that the structure has really begun to show its age.
The current 3 species are king, macaroni and rockhopper. The Penguinarium was the first building in North America specifically built for penguins, and while it was built in 1968 it was renovated in 1985.
