Sri Lanka giant squirrel

June 29 2013 Ratufa marcroura
In a large glass/fronted enclosure near the Asian elephant complex as part of something like an Asian temple - java sparrows and argus pheasants are also found nearby.

This looks more like a Ratufa bicolor? Rather than a Sri Lankan grizzled?

Indeed; this looks rather different from the Exmoor individual which I saw in January, and which was certainly a Sri Lankan Grizzled.

There is a lighter form like Ostrava keep/kept but this does look like a bicolor to me

Thank you !

So I know now where I have to look for it when I'm going to Pairi Daiza next week. I've never seen that species before, so hopefully it will be active.

According to Zootierliste, it is Ratufa macroura. I think, there are a lot of colour tpyes within that species, like most other squirrls.

Zootierliste *can* be inaccurate of course - as it claims the Pairi Daiza animal is the exact same subspecies as the aforementioned Exmoor animal (Ratufa macroura dandolena) I would be inclined to suspect the entry is incorrect at least to that extent, as the only photos of R.macroura I can find which approach the coloration of this individual - but do not match it - are of the nominate subspecies, not R. m. dandolena

Not being a Squirrel-expert either but I've seen Ratufa bicolor alive at Wassenaar Zoo ( a long time ago ) and the animal at Pairi Daiza surtainly looked quite different !
