7/13/2016 - Black-Backed Jackal

This was the best (and only) photo I could get of this animal.

It was so skittish, that I literally had to go back and forth from the exhibit a few times so it could come out. The jackal would scamper back into its shelter if I got as close as the striped hyenas. Finally, I just stood far away back and zoomed in as close and clear as possible.

So worth the patience!

I didn't know these were in captivity in the USA.

I believe there's a fair amount of them in private hands. Columbus also has them as far as i'm aware.

Apart from Columbus, the only other places I can think of that have jackals are Wildlife World Zoo in Arizona and some smaller facility (the name is currently escaping me, but I remember seeing a photo of it on here).

Living Treasures Animal Park in Pennsylvania.

No longer at the zoo afaik.

Black-Backed Jackals have always gotten the odd zoo treatment it seems. In 2016, both Hamerton Zoo and Colchester Zoo in the UK had the species but their enclosures are technically off-show, only visible from a certain areas and very few people actually saw them. I believe it's Valencia in Spain that keeps them, but they're only visible from the bird show. In the US, Wildlife world has a large space for them that's off-show from the public. It's weird, they just seem to always be hidden from visitors for some reason except at Plzen. Action Wildlife even has a stuffed one that can only be seen if you walk behind some of the larger displays via the emergency exit path.
