Kilimanjaro Safaris

Dec 2008. African elephants in their huge and winding paddock.
I know this is old, but the elephant enclosure is nine acres in size. And now there have been 8 births in total, and 6 live ones :D

From an animal care perspective is this considered to be the best elephant exhibit in the world?

I know some people don't like that you can only see it briefly from the vehicle, but having seen African elephants in the wild, it is the closest zoo elephant exhibit resembling real elephant habitat that I have seen.

That really is an amazing record. I think its an amazing elephant habitat, and in my opinon, the biggest + best I've seen. I wonder if our great zoo tour-er snowleopard agree's?

It's a phenomenal enclosure, the elephants can walk miles a day because f it's length. One of the things that makes this enclosure the best is the fact that they only have five adult female elephants, and six calves under age 10; giving the herd a natural dynamic!

I, and snowleopard, I believe agree, that it would be better if you could view the enclosure with leisure, which you can't do, since it's on a tram tour....

In terms of size I've heard that the exhibit is about 9.5 acres, which I believe makes it the largest zoo habitat for elephants in the United States, and the breeding record is excellent. However, many zoos have far superior enclosures (beginning with North Carolina, Nashville and Dallas) due to the fact that visitors can arguably see the elephants at DAK for only about 60 seconds or so. What is the point in that?

As usual, snowleopard makes a valid point;), however snowleopard, may I ask, if viewing wasn't an issue, and you could view the habitat as much as you wanted, would you rate it as high as the ones at north carolina, dallas and nashville?

Apparently there is now a walking safari tour that takes people to a pavilion overlooking the eles where they can be watched at liesure. So part of the point is making elephant fans choke up more money to watch them for an extended period of time. The Mouse has to make money with the elephants.

I'm sure that would be the case, as long as the walking trail was as amazing as the rest of the Disney African adventure. Pangani Forest Exploration Trail is outstanding, including what I consider to be my second favorite zoo gorilla habitat. To be able to walk at leisure is worth far more to me than any ride through "poaching territory".

Snowleopard, it has always puzzled me, why do you rate congo gorilla forest higher than the pangani forest? (I've never visited the congo gorilla forest) is it just because of the climate that new york gets in the winter and its a miracle they can maintain it in the winter?
